Book of Kings III

By Jeremy Fountas, Metropolitan of Gortynia & Megalopoli

The eleventh book of the already prestigious series narrates the story of Solomon's kingdom (962-952 B.C.), the split of the big kingdom into two smaller ones and the story of the kings of the two kingdoms, Juda and Israel, up to the death of the king Axab (852 B.C.). During Solomon's reign, the Israel kingdom reached the peak of its political and financial development, as the Lord rewarded the father, David, and his son, Solomon, for their piety. The detachment of the latter, though, at the end of his life from God led to the split of the kingdom. It is stressed that governing way of the king affects the spiritual and social progress of his subjects and, therefore, the fortune of the kingdom.

Theological and Canonical Tradition of the Church of Greece on the consecration, the reception and religious use of the chrism during the 19 th and 20 th centuries

Bishop of Fanari, Agathangelos

A detailed and exhaustive scientific research on the Chrism, the fragrant and living power of the Holy Spirit that, as Saint Symeon of Thessaloniki says, Christ himself offers it to us. The study was submitted as a dissertation to Pontifical Oriental Institute of Rome.

The work is divided into three parts:

Part A analyzes the mystical theology on the Chrism, its close association with Baptism, its Eucharistic and Eschatological nature and the significant position it has both in the tradition of the East and the West.

Part B analyses the customary reception of the Chrism by the Ecumenical Patriarchate for the worshipping needs of the bishops in Greece during the 19 th and 20 th centuries, with special emphasis on the turbulent period of the 1821 War of Independence and the declaration of the Autocephalous of the Greek Church (1833), which resulted in a shortage of the Chrism up to 1850 and then the normalization of the two Churches.

A wealth of archival and historical documents is presented from the Patriarchal Synodic Volumes (1850, 1866, 1882, 1908, 1928), but also unpublished texts taken from the Archive of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, indicative of the various phases of the relations between the Church of Greece with the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Parc C analytically presents the use of the Chrism in the liturgical life of the Church for the acceptance of heterodox people in the embrace of the Orthodox Church, in the inauguration of a Church, the consecration of icons and holy vessels and the long tradition for the consecration of kings.
